Arizona State University offers a range of online programs in counseling and applied psychology science, designed to prepare students to support mental health and well-being in various settings. ASU offers hundreds of online degrees and certificates, with most courses being 100 percent asynchronous. This allows students to balance their studies with work, family, and personal responsibilities while still meeting weekly deadlines.
Offered through the School of Counseling and Counseling Psychology, ASU’s program offerings include: an online 120-credit bachelor of science in counseling and applied psychological science with concentration options in counseling military members and veterans, sports and performance counseling, and substance abuse and addictions, each focusing on distinct client populations and counseling approaches; an online 60-credit master of counseling graduate program; and an online 21-credit graduate certificate in addiction and substance-use related disorders.
The online BS in counseling and applied psychological science program provides foundational training for students interested in promoting psychological well-being through topics like cultural diversity, addiction dynamics, counseling strategies, trauma, lifespan development, group counseling, and professional ethics, while building skills in adaptability, analytical thinking, cultural sensitivity, interpersonal relations, leadership, problem-solving, research methods, and group dynamics. Admission requires a 3.0 GPA in competency courses or a top 25 percent high school class rank, and ACT or SAT scores. Students complete a 135-hour supervised capstone internship plus a range of counseling courses, for 120 credits across 40 classes at 7.5 weeks each.
This concentration in substance abuse and addictions is designed for students who want to focus specifically on addiction counseling. The concentration in sport and performance counseling focuses on the psychological aspects of sport, exercise, and performance. The concentration in counseling military members and veterans centers on the specific needs and challenges of military populations.
ASU’s online master of counseling graduate program prepares students to provide culturally responsive clinical mental health services across the lifespan. The program combines coursework with three semesters of in-person, supervised field experiences in the student’s community, along with weekly live virtual group supervision sessions. Graduates are prepared to pursue licensure as professional counselors in Arizona and other states with similar requirements. Admission requires a minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of a bachelor’s program or in an applicable master’s program, plus an application, transcripts, personal statement, resume, letters of recommendation, and, when applicable, proof of English proficiency.
The online addiction and substance-use related disorders graduate certificate is designed for students and professionals who want focused training in evidence-based addiction treatment. Offered in seven 7.5-week classes, the certificate emphasizes evidence-based interventions and bridges research and clinical practice, preparing students to address issues such as the opioid epidemic and marijuana legalization. It is suitable for those with a bachelor’s degree in health, behavioral health, or related fields and can be completed as a standalone credential or paired with ASU graduate programs such as the doctor of behavioral health – clinical, MS in forensic psychology, MS in nursing, MS in psychology or master of social work. Admission requires a 3.0 GPA in a relevant bachelor’s or higher degree, an application, transcripts, one letter of recommendation, a personal statement, a current resume or CV, and, when needed, proof of English proficiency.
Located in Tempe, Arizona, the university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and ASU is also a NAADAC Approved Education Provider.
