Arkansas State University Online is the most experienced online provider in the state, with more than 10,000 graduates to date. The university offers fully online MSE programs in school counseling that prepare students to support K-12 mental health needs in public, private, charter, or virtual schools. Each program requires 48 credits and can be completed in 24 months.
Offered through the College of Education & Behavioral Science, A-State’s program offerings include: an online MSE in school counseling with a general concentration that covers diagnostic criteria, student mental health support, family counseling, research and assessment, career counseling, and post-secondary readiness; an online MSE in school counseling with a crisis and trauma concentration focused on school-based crisis planning, trauma impact, and multicultural issues; and an online MSE in school counseling with a special populations concentration that addresses counseling for students with disabilities, English language learners, and gifted or talented students.
Admission to any of the programs requires a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.75 GPA, official transcripts, and access to a classroom setting for the internship. Students in these programs complete 700 hours of experience, including a 100-hour practicum and 600 hours across two internships with at least 40 practicum and 240 internship hours in direct service with K-12 students, plus 10 hours of personal group counseling.
The general concentration builds skills in ethical and culturally responsive counseling, human development, group dynamics, the ASCA National Model, data-driven practices, needs assessments, and fundamental counseling techniques through 11 core courses and five concentration courses.
The crisis and trauma concentration equips students to develop comprehensive programs for K-12 students facing life-changing events, covering the effects of trauma on academic, social, and vocational success, as well as school crisis planning.
The special population concentration prepares counselors to maximize the academic, career, and social potential of K-12 students in subgroup populations, including best practices for special education, English language learners, and gifted or talented students. This track requires 13 core courses and three concentration courses.
Located in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and licensure programs within the College of Education & Behavioral Science are accredited by CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation).

Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. Rates may change, so please check here for the latest tuition information. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students. “Resident” and “non-resident” refer to the student’s school-recognized state residency status. Tuition number represents the cost of tuition for the entire program, not per semester or year. Estimated total tuition does not include additional fees.
