Butler University offers online counseling degree programs through its College of Education, with rigorous curricula aligned with national and state standards, 100 percent online classes taught by experienced faculty, no GRE or GMAT required, and up to 12 transfer credits accepted.

Butler University’s online counseling degrees include a master of science in mental health counseling program, a master of science in school counseling program, and a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) certificate, all featuring direct engagement with faculty and peers.

The programs prepare students for careers such as licensed mental health counselors, licensed clinical addictions counselors, licensed school counselors, trauma therapists, or career counselors in hospitals, schools, inpatient facilities, and other settings.

The online MS in mental health counseling program can be completed in 2.5 to three years, offering hands-on training, an addictions counseling focus, and preparation for licensure in Indiana. Students take 20 courses for a total of 60 credits on topics such as group procedures; diversity and similarity; career and life planning; and neurocounseling and psychopharmacology. The curriculum prepares students to pursue dual licensure in mental health counseling and clinical addictions counseling in Indiana.

The online MS in school counseling is a CACREP-accredited 60-credit program that can be completed in 2.5 to three years, preparing students for K-12 school counselor licensure in Indiana. Students complete 20 courses, including human development over the lifespan; trauma and crisis: prevention and response; administration of counseling & guidance services; and assisting grieving children. Graduates gain skills in data-informed practice, ethical or cultural responsiveness, social-emotional counseling, and advocacy for positive school climates.

Students in the master’s programs also complete a 100-hour practicum, a 600-hour internship, and participate in two Saturday residencies per year for evaluations. Admission to these programs requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and an interview.

The licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) certificate is designed to meet the needs of school counseling graduates who currently hold a master’s degree. This 12-credit program aligns with the State of Indiana standards for the LMHC license.

Admission requires official transcripts from degree-granting institutions, a graduate GPA of 3.5 or above, and attestation of 700 practicum or internship hours in qualified settings. Courses include foundations of mental health counseling; knowledge and skills for the practice of mental health counseling; contextual dimensions of mental health counseling; and topics and experiences in mental health counseling.

Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, the university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and the College of Education is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
