The university offers 100 percent online MEd programs in clinical mental health counseling; counseling & development with specializations in marriage, couple, and family counseling and professional school counseling; and a post-master’s certificate in mental health counseling.

The online MEd program in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit program that can be completed in as few as 30 months, preparing students to provide clinical counseling for substance abuse, marriage, family, career, and emotional issues. Students gain knowledge of counseling strategies through courses including foundations of professional counseling; counseling skills; substance abuse counseling; and crisis prevention & intervention, plus two five-day face-to-face residencies, a practicum, and an internship. The program meets Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) educational requirements.

The online MEd in counseling & development with a concentration in marriage, couple, and family counseling is a 60-credit program that can be completed in 30 months, teaching diagnosis of mental disorders and resolution of family conflicts related to divorce, mediation, child rearing, and family violence. Students study family structures, life-cycle dynamics, and healthy family functioning through courses such as human sexuality and counseling applications; assessment and treatment in MCFC; and marriage, couple, and family counseling, plus one residency, a 15-week practicum, and a 15-week internship. The program meets Texas LPC and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) educational requirements.

The online MEd in counseling & development with a concentration in professional school counseling is a 60-credit program that can be completed in 30 months and is designed for elementary, middle, and secondary school counselors serving culturally diverse students. Students learn theoretical, behavioral, and play therapy techniques through courses such as child and adolescent counseling; developmental guidance and counseling; and a school counseling practicum, plus one residency, a 15-week practicum, and a 15-week internship. The program meets Texas School Counseling Certification and LPC educational requirements.

The post-master’s certificate in mental health counseling is an 18-credit program designed to be completed in just 12 months for graduates of 48-hour master’s counseling degrees seeking Texas LPC licensure. Students complete courses including psychopathology and basic psychopharmacology; advanced ethics in mental health counseling; addictions counseling; and foundations of clinical mental health counseling. The certificate provides the additional credits needed to reach the 60-credit licensure requirements.

Admission to the clinical mental health counseling and the MEd programs in marriage, couple, and family counseling requires an online application and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0, with no GRE required. Admission to the professional school counseling MEd requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75, with no teaching certificate required. The post-master’s certificate requires an online application, a master’s degree, and a 3.0 graduate GPA.
