Merrimack College offers flexible online and on-campus options for a master of science in clinical mental health counseling and a master of education in school counseling, designed for working adults.
The MS in clinical mental health counseling is a 60- to 62-credit program designed to be completed in two years full-time or three to four years part-time. Students learn trauma-informed counseling, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, addictions, group counseling, and telecounseling through courses including counseling theory; diagnosis and treatment planning; and ethics and legal issues in counseling.
The LMHC licensure track includes 100 practicum hours and 600 internship hours, meeting requirements for licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) in Massachusetts or New Hampshire and LPC in most states. A research track also offers independent clinical research for doctoral preparation.
The MEd in school counseling is a 48-credit program approved by Massachusetts DESE for Initial Licensure that can be completed in two years full-time. Students complete 44 core credits covering counseling theory, youth development, and interventions through courses including foundations of school counseling; trauma informed counseling in schools; and career and college counseling and development. Licensure concentrations include school counseling or school social work/adjustment counseling (pre-K through 12) with 600 to 1,200 field hours, aligned with American School Counselors Association standards.
Admission to both programs requires an online application (no fee), official transcripts from all institutions, a resume or LinkedIn profile, and a personal statement. No GRE or GMAT is required, and additional materials may be requested.
Merrimack College is a private Augustinian university in North Andover, Massachusetts, accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).
