Mississippi State University Online MS in Rehabilitation Counseling
Mississippi State University offers one online counseling program: a master of science in counselor education with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling. This program prepares students to serve individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses through culturally competent counseling and support for independence, career development, and quality of life.
The program is a planned 60-credit curriculum that includes 39 core counseling, practicum, and internship hours, six elective hours, and 15 rehabilitation counseling concentration hours. It is designed for both full-time and part-time students, and it combines online classroom learning with university-based and community practicum and internship experiences. Students work with persons with disabilities in medical facilities, clinics, rehabilitation centers, private practices, community organizations, state vocational rehabilitation agencies, and government agencies. Graduates must pass a comprehensive master’s examination and maintain a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The master of science in counselor education with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling prepares graduates for employment in state vocational rehabilitation agencies, high schools and college settings, non-profit rehabilitation programs, independent living centers, veterans affairs, medical rehabilitation centers, private industry, substance abuse treatment programs, mental health agencies, corrections facilities, and private practice. Important concentration courses include vocational assessment of special needs persons; vocational rehabilitation counseling; psychological aspects of disability; medical aspects of disability; and job placement in rehabilitation. Important core courses include counseling theory; counseling skills development; group techniques and procedures; assessment techniques in counseling; cultural foundations in counseling; a practicum; and an internship.
Graduates meet educational qualifications for certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, a nationally recognized credential, and for immediate eligibility for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Mississippi. After graduation, students must register and complete required supervision hours and exams for LPC licensure. The program trains working professionals and students from within and outside Mississippi to become ethically and culturally responsive rehabilitation professionals in human services.
Admission requires a baccalaureate degree and a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Applicants must submit an online application, choosing counselor education with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling as the program of study and online education as the campus, a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, one official transcript showing the bachelor’s degree or progress toward the degree, one official transcript showing all work after the bachelor’s degree, and payment of a non-refundable application processing fee. International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Counseling applications are considered until total enrollment is attained, and students are admitted into a cohort that follows a predetermined course sequence.
Mississippi State University’s main campus is located in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, adjacent to Starkville. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and the MS program in counseling with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
