New York University is a private research university in New York City, and NYU Steinhardt is nationally recognized for its programs in education, communication, health, and the arts.

NYU’s online master of arts in counseling for mental health and wellness (Counseling@NYU) is a 60-credit program that can be completed full-time or part-time in 21 to 30 months and prepares students across the United States to pursue licensure and work as clinical mental health counselors.

The online MA in counseling for mental health and wellness combines live online classes, interactive counseling labs, and supervised fieldwork to build strong clinical and cultural competence skills. Students complete 60 graduate credits, a 100-hour practicum with at least 40 hours of direct practice, and a 600-hour internship with at least 240 hours of direct practice, plus a three-day on-campus immersion in New York City.

The curriculum covers human development, counseling theories, multicultural and cross-cultural counseling, ethics, and assessment, with sample courses such as cross-cultural counseling; abnormal psychology; research and evaluation methods in behavioral sciences; and internship in counseling for mental health and wellness I & II. Students can tailor their applied content area with electives on topics like substance-related disorders, marriage and family counseling, responses to trauma, adolescent sexual decision-making, and immigrant-origin youth.

The program emphasizes social justice, wellness, and work with diverse clients across the lifespan. All students must pass the Counselor Education Comprehensive Examination (CECE) in their final term as the terminal experience requirement. Upon completion, graduates will be ready to pursue roles in outpatient care centers, family service agencies, hospitals, community mental health organizations, and private practices, helping clients with issues like anxiety, grief, trauma, relationships, and life transitions.

Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university, a resume or CV, two letters of recommendation, official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions, and a personal record that shows commitment to equity and social justice. Experience in mental health settings such as hotlines, psychiatric centers, or crisis centers is helpful. GRE scores are not required, and applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency if their prior degree was not taught in English.

New York University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), and the online MA in counseling for mental health and wellness is accredited by the Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) and registered by New York State as a license-qualifying mental health counseling program.
