Southeastern Oklahoma State University is a public university providing personal attention from faculty, affordable tuition, and student-centered online programs. The university’s School of Education and Behavioral Sciences offers an online master of education program in school counseling that helps students learn about the strategies and theories needed to serve as guidance counselors, career advisors, and more.
This 100 percent online accelerated program builds on classroom teaching experience to train guidance counselors and career advisors. It covers child development, assessment, diversity, and psychopathology through flexible courses suited for full-time workers. Students complete a practicum with at least 100 hours of counseling services, including 40 direct client contact hours, plus a three-hour elective.
The online MEd in school counseling is a 42-credit program requiring 15 courses. It teaches strategies for counseling children, adolescents, parents, and teachers, for planning comprehensive school programs, and for applying counseling theories across diverse contexts. Key courses include school counseling orientation and ethical practice; theories of counseling; counseling children and adolescents; and a school counseling practicum.
To meet admission requirements, applicants need a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and a valid teaching certificate, plus one of these: minimum 2.75 overall GPA or 3.0 in last 60 hours; or minimum 2.0 GPA with two years teaching experience, professional recommendation, and career goals letter approved by faculty; or at least 6 graduate hours with 3.0 GPA in good standing. GRE scores are not required for admission.
Southeastern Oklahoma State University is located in Durant, Oklahoma, and is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The School of Education and Behavioral Sciences holds CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) accreditation, and the school counseling program is accredited by the Commission of the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA).
