St. Bonaventure University offers two online counseling programs: the master of science in education (MSEd) in clinical mental health counseling and the master of science in education (MSEd) in school counseling. Both programs are built for students who want flexible online study, practical training, and preparation for counseling careers and licensure.

These programs share a strong foundation in counseling theory, ethics, multicultural understanding, and supervised experience. Students complete 60 credits, 100 practicum hours, and 600 internship hours in each program. St. Bonaventure also provides one-on-one support, seven-week course sessions, and start terms in fall, spring, and summer.

Both programs share the same core courses. These include research methods; advanced human growth and development; introduction to the profession of counseling theories and techniques of counseling; diagnosis of psychopathology; psychological testing and assessment; group counseling; interventions for school and CMH counseling; career counseling; human sexuality issues in counseling; multicultural counseling; and introduction to play therapy.

The online MSEd in clinical mental health counseling prepares students for work in mental health clinics, hospitals, colleges, and social service settings. The program focuses on individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, cultural competency, and ethical practice. CMHC courses include ethical and legal issues in CMHC; management for CMHC programs; introduction to addictions; introduction to crisis counseling; family and couples counseling; a practicum in counseling; and CMHC internships. Students may also add an advanced certificate in school counseling after the degree.

The online MSEd in school counseling prepares students to support children and adolescents in private, public, and parochial schools. The program is designed for students who want to work in P-12 settings and develop skills in counseling, advocacy, and student support. Specialty school counseling courses include foundations of school counseling; ethical and legal issues in school counseling; child and adolescent counseling; special topics in school counseling; school counseling and special education; a practicum; and two school counseling internships. The program also prepares students for school counseling work and offers a strong school-based training path.

Admission requirements for both programs include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum 3.0 GPA, transcripts from all colleges attended, an online application, a personal statement, two professional letters of recommendation, and an interview. St. Bonaventure may consider applicants with a 2.75 GPA or above, and some states may require additional coursework for licensure. The university also notes that no GRE or GMAT is required.

St. Bonaventure University is located in St. Bonaventure, New York, and the online programs serve students from many states. The university is a private Franciscan institution established in 1858 and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Both counseling programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
