School Logo

The University of Wisconsin-Superior is a public liberal arts university that prioritizes students with individualized attention from experienced faculty and affordable, pay-as-you-go online degrees. UW-Superior offers three online master of science in education programs in counseling: a 60-credit clinical mental health track, a 36-credit marriage and family therapy track, and a 60-credit school counseling track.

All programs deliver 100 percent online coursework that can be completed in as few as 24 months, with multiple start dates, the same in-state/out-of-state tuition, and integrated practicum/internship hours. They emphasize counseling theories, multicultural competence, crisis intervention, assessment, and ethical practice through synchronous elements in select courses. Graduates qualify for licensure in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and many other states after passing exams.

The MSE in counseling, clinical mental health track builds expertise for licensed practice through core and LPCC-specific courses, including counseling theories; clinical mental health diagnosis and treatment planning; practicum/internship; and internship, preparing for careers in private practice, hospitals, agencies, substance abuse centers, and correctional systems.

The MSE in counseling marriage and family therapy track focuses on family or relationship intervention through track courses such as family group systems; couple and marital counseling; counseling and human sexuality; and practicum or internship, supporting roles in healthcare, mental health facilities, community centers, schools, and legal systems.

The MSE in counseling, school counseling track trains for K-12 licensure (no teaching license needed) through track courses including introduction to professional school counseling; play therapy; counseling children & adolescents; and practicum/internship, leading to positions as licensed school or district counselors, career counselors, or postsecondary teachers. Notably, students in this program must pass the Praxis Professional School Counselor (5422) exam to graduate.

Admission to all programs requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, official transcripts, a resume, a letter of intent, three letters of recommendation, and a criminal background check. Neither a GRE score nor a teaching license is required for admission.

Institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the University of Wisconsin-Superior is located in Superior, Wisconsin.
