Walden University offers extensive online MS programs in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling with a general specialization as well as with optional specialization options in addiction counseling; forensic counseling; marriage, couple, and family counseling; military families and culture; play therapy; rehabilitation counseling; telehealth counseling, private practice, and supervision; and trauma and crisis counseling.
The university also offers MS dual degree programs combining clinical mental health and school counseling with matching specializations.
PhD programs in counselor education and supervision are also offered with either the general track or through specializations in addiction counseling, clinical mental health counseling, marriage, couple, and family counseling, school counseling, telehealth counseling, and trauma and crisis counseling.
Walden’s counseling programs feature streamlined admissions with no application fee, no GRE/SAT/ACT requirements, primarily online coursework with field experiences (practicum 100 hours and internship 600 hours), two pre-practicum labs (six weeks online and four-day face-to-face or virtual synchronous), and a group lab (nine weeks online with live synchronous group). The MS in clinical mental health counseling program totals 90 to 96 quarter credits that can be completed in 33 months, while the school counseling program requires 90 credits over 33 months. The dual degree programs require 111 to 121 credits over 45 months. PhD counselor education and supervision programs require 85 to 100 quarter credits, including foundation, core, research, specialization, dissertation, residency, and two intensives. Programs emphasize evidence-based treatment, multicultural competence, ethics, and social change, and preparation for licensure in many states.
The MS in clinical mental health counseling program helps students build skills through foundation and core courses such as introduction to clinical mental health counseling; techniques in counseling; theories of counseling; and ethics and legal issues in counseling, and gain field experience for LPC/LMHC licensure. Specializations add 10 to 15 credits each.
Courses include theories, treatment, and case management of addiction; treatment of forensic populations; advanced theory and application; military culture; introduction to play therapy; introduction to rehabilitation counseling; distance-based counseling; the private practitioner; supervising counselors-in-training; and crisis management.
The MS in school counseling program prepares P–12 counselors through core courses such as introduction to school counseling; leadership, advocacy, and consultation; child and adolescent counseling; and 700 hours of fieldwork for state certification. The eight specializations in this program focus on topics related to school settings.
The dual degree MS in clinical mental health and school counseling program awards both degrees simultaneously through combined core courses, 600 hours of field experiences, and similar specializations in addiction; forensic; marriage, couple, and family; military families; play therapy; rehabilitation; telehealth; and trauma crisis.
The PhD in counselor education and supervision program trains educators and supervisors through foundation and core courses in teaching in counselor education; clinical supervision; and survey research methods. The program also includes 25 credits of research courses, 10 to 15 credits of specialization courses, internships, dissertation, residency, and two intensives. Notably, this is not a licensure program and does not prepare an individual to become a licensed counseling professional.
MS programs require bachelor’s degrees in any field. The PhD programs require a master’s degree or higher in counseling. All programs need transcripts, while GRE test scores are not required for admission.
Institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Walden University is a private, for-profit online university headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
