Trevecca Nazarene University Online PhD in Counseling
Trevecca Nazarene University offers an online PhD in clinical counseling: teaching and supervision for counselors who want to advance into teaching, supervision, research, and leadership. The program combines professional preparation with Trevecca’s Christ-centered approach to education and emphasis on service to others.
The 66-credit program can be completed in about three years. Online and in-person students study in the same cohort. The online option requires a two- to three-day residency each semester. Students choose either the online or in-person option before starting, while a hybrid option is not available.
The curriculum helps students strengthen their clinical counseling skills, lead in mental health settings, and conduct professional research. Important courses include advanced multicultural counseling; supervision models; technology and teaching strategies in counselor education; and doctoral research methodology. Students also complete doctoral internships and dissertation research. Graduates may pursue roles as counselor educators, clinical supervisors, mental health researchers, and counselors.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree in counseling or a counseling-related field and have completed all or most of the required master’s-level counseling coursework. Prerequisites include areas such as ethics, human growth and development, group counseling, research, assessment, and practicum or internship. The application requires a coursework verification form, an online application, official transcripts, an official GRE score, three signed recommendation forms, a 400-word letter of intent, and a professional resume or curriculum vitae.
