Bellevue University Online MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Bellevue University offers a fully online master of science in clinical mental health counseling, a 60-credit CACREP-accredited program modeled on national licensing standards to prepare students for clinical mental health licensure exams. Graduates gain skills in assessment, diagnosis, case conceptualization, and treatment planning to serve diverse clients effectively.
The program includes 100 practicum hours and 600 clinical internship hours, plus two required residencies, all of which can be completed locally with coordinator approval. Courses stay current with evolving practices, ethics, and diagnostics. Students taking over five years must repeat outdated coursework. It emphasizes professional identity, multicultural competence, ethical practice, advocacy, self-care, and lifelong learning to advance community mental health.
Key foundation courses cover helping relationships; introduction to counseling theories; orientation to clinical mental health counseling; ethical, legal, and professional issues in the practice of counseling; and assessment. Advanced coursework includes diagnosis of mental and behavioral disorders; group processes and facilitation; social and cultural diversity; trauma, crisis, and traumatic stress counseling; and counseling practicum. Students choose one elective, such as theories of psychopathology or human sexuality, followed by three clinical internship courses.
Admission requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a 2.5 GPA in the most recent 60 undergraduate credits or 3.0 in prior graduate work, plus six prerequisite credits in behavioral sciences. Applicants submit a current resume, two professional letters of recommendation from professors or counseling or mental health employers, a 1,000-word statement of interest, and transcripts. GRE or GMAT scores are not required for admission.
