University of Arkansas Little Rock Online Master’s in Counseling

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock offers a fully online master of arts in counseling with three tracks: counselor education, clinical mental health counseling, and clinical rehabilitation counseling. The programs are offered through the School of Counseling, Human Performance, and Rehabilitation (CHPR) and prepare students to provide direct counseling services and resource coordination for individuals.

All three tracks include practicum and internship requirements. The counselor education track requires 48 credits, while the clinical mental health counseling and clinical rehabilitation counseling tracks each require 60 credits.

The counselor education track prepares students to become school counselors in K-12 schools, higher education, or adult education. Important courses include Foundations for School Guidance and Counseling Programs; Counseling Theories and Applications; Career Development, Planning, and Information Services; and Theories and Techniques of Group Counseling. Students complete a school counseling practicum and internship. The track also offers coursework for students who already hold a master’s degree and want to become licensed in school counseling.

The clinical mental health counseling track prepares students to become licensed professional counselors or licensed clinical mental health counselors. Graduates may work in mental health agencies, substance abuse treatment centers, hospitals, and other settings that support emotional and mental well-being. Important courses include foundations of mental health counseling; counseling theories and applications; ethics and advocacy for counselors; and psychopharmacology for counselors. Students also complete a counseling practicum and internship.

The clinical rehabilitation counseling track prepares students to provide counseling and resource coordination for people with developmental, psychiatric, emotional, cognitive, or physical disabilities. Important courses include rehabilitation foundations; psychological aspects of disability; medical aspects of disability; and career counseling and placement. Students complete a counseling practicum and internship, and graduates qualify for the national Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential.

Admission requires an application to the UA Little Rock Graduate School, a personal interview with a program faculty member or designated representative, and a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants generally need a minimum 2.7 overall undergraduate GPA or a 3.0 GPA over the last 60 hours. Applicants with lower undergraduate GPAs must submit GRE scores.
