Auburn University Online MEd in Counseling Programs

Auburn University offers online MEd programs in counseling through its Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and Counseling, including clinical mental health counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, and school counseling. Each 60-credit program prepares students for professional roles in mental health agencies, rehabilitation services, or schools, with a focus on addressing biopsychosocial barriers through culturally sustaining practices.

All programs share core elements, such as virtual residency training at the start of Fall (and maybe some spring semesters) via Zoom, which covers clinical and technical requirements. They emphasize ethical behavior, professional identity, advocacy, social justice, the use of technology in counseling, and clinical practice through practicum and internship experiences. Students build skills for diverse populations across cultures, races, genders, abilities, and socioeconomic statuses.

The MEd in clinical mental health counseling trains counselors for inpatient, non-profit, outpatient, private practice, agency, or educational settings. It includes shared courses like counseling theories; group counseling; and introduction to counseling practice, plus specialty ones such as orientation to clinical mental health counseling; advanced assessment and diagnosis in counseling; and advanced clinical mental health counseling interventions.

The MEd in school counseling readies students for roles in public or private elementary, middle, or high schools, leading to a Class A Alabama professional educator certification recommendation. Alongside core courses like counseling diverse populations and crisis intervention in counseling, unique classes cover foundations of school counseling; leadership and advocacy for school counselors; and an advanced survey of exceptionality.

The MEd in clinical rehabilitation counseling equips graduates to support youth and adults with disabilities in state/federal vocational programs or non-profits. Building on foundations like orientation to professional counseling and practicum, it features specialized courses including medical vocational & psychosocial aspects of disability; introduction to rehabilitation and case management in rehabilitation counseling; and occupational, career, and placement services.

Admission is based on a holistic review, with a minimum GPA of 2.75 for all programs. Common requirements include a graduate school application with payment, official transcripts, three reference forms, a statement of intent, a cultural statement, a resume or CV, and TOEFL test scores for international students. School counseling adds an Alabama fingerprint background check, while clinical rehabilitation counseling requires a writing sample.
