Avila University Online Master’s in School Counseling
Avila University is a private Catholic university offering the online master of arts in education (MAEd) in the K-12 school counselor program. This 48-credit program prepares students to become licensed school counselors who support academic, career, and personal growth for K-12 students through counseling theories, ethical practice, and restorative interventions.
The fully online program features 8-week courses with multiple start dates yearly, accessible anytime with textbooks included, and personalized faculty feedback for working professionals. It can be completed in as few as 30 months and covers human development, cultural diversity, career planning, program evaluation, collaboration with families and communities, and clinical fieldwork through practicums and internships, leading to Missouri licensure and certification eligibility.
The online MAEd in K-12 school counselor program offers courses in foundations of school counseling; counseling theories; group & individual counseling; school counseling program development & implementation; restorative practices in education; and two school counseling practicums, as well as two school counseling internships. Students without a bachelor’s in education from a state-approved program complete two leveling courses. These include general methods of teaching and classroom management, and educating the exceptional child.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, official transcripts from all prior schools, and a minimum 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA for provisional entry or 3.00 for unconditional admission. Provisional students must earn a 3.0 GPA in their first nine credits. No GRE or teaching certification is needed.
Avila University is located in Kansas City, Missouri, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). It holds membership in good standing with the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
