California Baptist University Online MS in Counseling Psychology
California Baptist University offers an online master of science program in counseling psychology. This 63-credit program can be completed in just 24 months, preparing students for licensure as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in California. This faith-integrated program equips graduates to guide individuals, couples, families, and children through psychological challenges using compassionate, Christ-centered leadership.
The program blends mostly asynchronous accelerated courses with some synchronous virtual classes, mainly on Tuesday evenings, allowing working adults to build relationships with peers and faculty. Students complete 24 hours of individual psychotherapy or 50 hours of group therapy off-campus with a licensed psychotherapist, plus a comprehensive exam during practicum in the final year. Core coursework covers human growth and development, family therapy models, psychopharmacology, addictions, psychopathology, ethics, research, and diversity issues, fostering skills in diagnosis, treatment planning, and evidence-based interventions.
Key courses include MFT counseling theory; couples therapy, intimate partner violence; family therapy I and II; professional ethics and law; advanced psychopathology; psychodiagnostics; along with two practicum courses. Optional courses for licensure as a professional clinical counselor include community mental health counseling and career counseling.
Admission to the online MS in counseling psychology requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited US institution, preferably in psychology. Students without a psychology undergraduate degree must complete either general psychology or life span development as a prerequisite. Applicants need a minimum 2.75 GPA in their last 60 or 90 units, an application with a fee, official transcripts, and either a written statement of purpose or an in-person or virtual program interview. Additional requirements may be requested by the admissions team.
California Baptist University is a private Baptist Christian university located in Riverside, California, United States. It is regionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). The MS in counseling psychology is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Science to meet educational requirements for LMFT or LPCC licensure.
