Chadron State College Online MAE Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Chadron State College offers a 60-credit master of arts in education (MAE) in clinical mental health counseling program for students preparing for clinical counseling careers and Nebraska mental health licensure. The integrated degree builds a strong counseling foundation through a shared core and focused clinical mental health coursework.
The MAE in clinical mental health counseling is designed to prepare counselors to serve multicultural, diverse, and global communities, especially marginalized populations. Students develop skills in professional identity, human development across the lifespan, career development, group work, ethical and culturally responsive assessment, research use, diagnosis, case conceptualization, and treatment planning. Field experiences include a clinical mental health counseling practicum and two internships in clinical settings, giving practical experience in agencies such as counseling centers, substance abuse centers, career centers, employee assistance programs, corrections, and private practice.
Key courses include introduction to clinical mental health counseling; multicultural counseling; counseling theories; crisis counseling; and clinical mental health counseling practicum. Students may also complete coursework that supports the Nebraska Provisional Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (PLADC) license under LADC supervision, and can pursue academic requirements toward a Nebraska Professional School Counselor Endorsement with appropriate internships.
Admission to graduate study in the MAE program requires an online application, a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, and official transcripts from the degree-granting institution and any later institutions. Applicants submit an admission essay and must view the new student orientation video. Some students may be required to complete additional coursework if the graduate council identifies deficiencies in their preparation. At least 24 graduate course credits must be completed after formal acceptance, and students have up to seven years to finish the degree, including the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) and a Graduate e-Portfolio.
Chadron State College is a public college located in Chadron, Nebraska. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and the clinical mental health counseling master’s degree is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), with its curriculum also approved by the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services Licensure Unit for counselor education and continuing education.
