Chaminade University of Honolulu MFT & Counseling Psych Programs

Chaminade University of Honolulu offers three online graduate programs: a master of science in marriage and family therapy (MSMFT) and an MS in counseling psychology (MSCP) with concentrations in mental health counseling or school counseling. Each is a 60-credit program that can be completed in 30 to 32 months through 10-week terms with synchronous online classes and extensive practicum and internship clinical training for Hawaii licensure pathways.

All programs emphasize counseling theory, evidence-based practice, ethical standards, cultural responsiveness, research methods, group processes, and career development, delivered fully online or in-person with faculty mentorship and practicum and internship hours in real-world settings. MSMFT students receive assistance with practicum placements, while MSCP programs require 700 hours of practicum and internship experience. Notably, pathways exist to doctoral programs like DMFT or EdD in educational psychology by applying credits and maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

The MSMFT program prepares students for Hawaii LMFT licensure, focusing on relational or systemic approaches to assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and treatment for individuals, couples, families, and groups across diverse communities. Key courses include marriage and family therapy systems; family therapy: assessment and intervention; couples and relationship therapy; sex therapy; medical family therapy and psychopharmacology; and four practicum courses.

Students in the MS in counseling psychology with a concentration in mental health counseling program build skills to help children, adolescents, and adults manage cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges, such as resilience-building and crisis response in community settings. Unique courses cover substance use disorder, addictions counseling, and psychopharmacology; couples, family systems, and human sexuality; mental health counseling; and crisis counseling and mental health in the community.

The MS in counseling psychology program with an AAQEP-accredited school counseling track equips students to support PK-12 learners socially, behaviorally, and academically as school counselors, fostering critical thinking and community involvement. Required courses include school counseling and exceptional children; the school counselor in an educational context; psychological & educational testing; evaluation processes in a school setting, and contemporary mental health issues in school settings.

Admission to all programs requires a completed Chaminade application, a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited US college or university or equivalent foreign institution, official transcripts, an interview, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, or a resume or CV. International applicants whose native language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency.
