City University of Seattle Online MA in Counseling & MFT Programs
City University of Seattle offers a 93-credit master of arts in counseling (MAC) with a clinical mental health counseling track. It also has an online master of arts program in marriage and family therapy (MFT). These online programs train counselors for licensure in Washington State as mental health counselors (LMHC) or LMFTs.
All programs use a practitioner-scholar model emphasizing social justice, ethical practice, diversity, human growth, career development, counseling techniques, group work, assessment, research, psychopathology, addictions, crisis/trauma, and self-awareness through coursework by practitioner faculty. They prepare students as anti-racist advocates and community leaders with strengths-based wellness approaches, including counseling skills labs, practicum, multiple internships, and capstones for real-world application in diverse settings like agencies, schools, hospitals, and private practice.
The CACREP-accredited MA in counseling with a clinical mental health counseling track equips students for LMHC licensure, focusing on theory-based treatment for client problems, diagnoses, and co-occurring disorders. Key courses include introduction to psychopathology and psychopharmacology; addictions and co-occurring counseling; counseling older adults; two practicum courses; and three counseling internships.
The master of arts program in marriage and family therapy prepares self-reflective systemic therapists for LMFTA licensure, emphasizing ethics aligned with AAMFT standards, cultural responsiveness, and community advocacy, with 12 internship credits under approved supervisors. Key courses include foundations of systemic practice; advanced therapeutic techniques; family of origin from a systemic perspective; multicultural perspective; applied intimate partner therapy; couple life cycle; three internships, and a capstone project.
Admission to MAC requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA, three professional references, a writing sample on counseling goals and experience, a current resume or CV, a background check free of criminal convictions, and an interview with the program director or coordinator. Proof of English proficiency is required for non-native speakers; the GRE is not required.
For admission to the MFT program, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, preferably in psychology, family studies, or a related field, with demonstrated professional experience. Two to three professional references, a two-page essay on MFT career journey, an updated CV or resume, and an MFT faculty interview are also required.
City University of Seattle is a private nonprofit university founded in 1973 and located in Seattle, Washington.
