College of William & Mary Online MEd in Counseling Programs
The College of William & Mary offers three online master of education (MEd) programs in counseling: clinical mental health counseling, clinical mental health counseling with a military and veterans counseling specialization, and school counseling. Each CACREP-accredited program totals 60 credits, which can be completed in three years. It blends online coursework with two three-day on-campus residencies and a required practicum (100 hours) and internship (600 hours) for licensure preparation.
All tracks share core training in professional ethics, counseling theories, human growth and development, multicultural counseling, psychopathology, research methods, group techniques, marriage and family counseling, and career development through interactive online learning, faculty mentorship, and experiential residencies focused on social justice and cultural responsiveness. Fieldwork demands eight to ten hours weekly for practicum and 20 hours for internship at approved sites like agencies, hospitals, schools, or veteran services, building competencies in diagnosis, treatment, referral, and prevention.
The clinical mental health counseling concentration prepares students for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure and Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP) status in Virginia, equipping them to address diverse mental health needs through electives in addictions and transpersonal counseling. Key courses include addictions counseling; contemporary issues in clinical mental health counseling; couples counseling and sex therapy; substance abuse and society; and transpersonal counseling; plus a supervised internship in clinical mental health counseling.
Building on the CMHC foundation, the clinical mental health counseling with military and veterans counseling specialization targets military personnel, veterans, and families with trauma and transition support. Unique courses cover military life, culture, and challenges; the military-to-veteran transition; the assessment and treatment of trauma-related disorders; and a supervised internship in military and veterans counseling.
Students in the school counseling concentration train as K-12 leaders promoting equity and student success, qualifying for the Virginia Pupil Personnel Services License after two years of experience. Required courses include introduction to professional school counseling; theories & strategies for counseling school-aged children; advanced issues in professional school counseling; substance abuse and society; prevention and intervention within public schools; and a supervised internship in school counseling.
The baseline requirement for William & Mary’s online MEd in counseling programs is that all applicants must have a completed bachelor’s degree (or equivalent). Application requirements include a completed online application with a fee, official transcripts from all institutions, three letters of recommendation from professional or academic references, a personal essay, and a resume of full employment history. International applicants must provide proof of English proficiency via the TOEFL or IELTS. Application fee waivers are offered to US service members or veterans, AmeriCorps or Peace Corps participants, and Fulbright or McNair scholars.
The College of William & Mary, founded in 1693 as the second-oldest institution of higher education in the US, is located in Williamsburg, Virginia. It holds accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), with the online MEd in counseling and all concentrations accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
