Concordia University Wisconsin Online MS in Counseling
Concordia University Wisconsin is a private Lutheran university in Mequon, Wisconsin, that offers online master of science degrees in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling through its School of Education and Department of Graduate Education. Both counseling programs are designed to serve working adults with flexible eight-week online courses and a mission-driven focus on preparing Christian servant leaders for high-impact roles in schools, agencies, healthcare systems, and private practice.
Across both degrees, students learn core counseling knowledge and skills in areas such as counseling theories, human growth and development, social and cultural foundations, individual and group counseling, career counseling, assessment and tests, family counseling, trauma counseling, and professional ethics. The curriculum in each program blends academic content, practical counseling techniques, and supervised clinical experiences, including practicum and internships. Both programs use primarily online delivery with two practice clinical skills classes that meet either on campus or via Zoom and offer optional intensive sessions in the summer.
The master of science in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit online degree built to meet Wisconsin requirements for Licensed Professional Counselor in training (LPC-IT) status. Students take courses such as Counseling Theories and Issues; Social and Cultural Foundations in Counseling; Trauma Counseling; and Foundations of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and they complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship under supervision in approved community or healthcare settings. The program includes a capstone project and offers an embedded substance abuse counseling course sequence that can qualify graduates to apply for a Substance Abuse Counselor in training (SAC-IT) license in Wisconsin after meeting additional supervised hours in the alcohol and other drug abuse field.
The master of science in school counseling is a 45 to 48-credit online degree that prepares graduates to become licensed K-12 school counselors serving elementary, middle, and high school students. Core courses include counseling theories and issues; trauma counseling; career counseling foundations; and design, implementation, and evaluation of counseling programs, while non-teachers also complete classroom management for counselors. Students finish 600 supervised practicum hours, with about 200 hours at each school level, and build a professional portfolio aligned with Wisconsin Pupil Services Standards as they progress through introduction, pre-practicum, and level-specific portfolio components linked to practicum placements.
Admission to both programs requires an awarded bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. The graduate admission process includes an online application form with a nonrefundable fee, a one page essay, a current resume, two letters of recommendation, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended, as well as a short video introduction submitted through the university’s application system, a copy of government issued identification, and completion of a background check required by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Neither program requires a graduate admissions exam such as the GRE.
Concordia University Wisconsin has served students since 1881. The institution is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and the clinical mental health counseling curriculum is aligned to Wisconsin professional counselor licensure requirements, while the school counseling program is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for endorsement of the K-12 school counselor license.
