Delta State University Online MEd in Counseling Programs
Delta State University offers a master of education (MEd) in counseling with two online or hybrid specialties, clinical mental health counseling and school counseling. The 60-credit program is designed to prepare students for professional counseling roles in school, community, and clinical settings while also creating pathways to Mississippi licensure and certification.
Both specialties share a strong focus on counseling theory, ethics, assessment, human development, group work, research, and field experience. Students can study in a fully online or hybrid format, depending on how far they live from campus. The program also offers full-time and part-time options, research opportunities, internship experiences, and support from faculty who bring real-world clinical experience into the classroom. Delta State also emphasizes professional growth through its counseling lab, cohort relationships, and annual helping professions conference.
The clinical mental health counseling specialty prepares students to work in mental health settings across the United States and in private practice. Students study courses such as foundations of clinical mental health; psychodiagnostics; crisis intervention; counseling children and adolescents; and marriage and family counseling. The program includes a required internship in a clinical mental health setting and prepares graduates to sit for the National Counselor Exam and apply for a provisional licensed professional counselor credential in Mississippi.
The school counseling specialty prepares students to serve as school counselors in Mississippi and beyond, including elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as higher education settings. Students study courses such as foundations in school counseling; consultation and counseling of diverse populations; crisis intervention techniques; counseling children and adolescents; marriage and family counseling; methods of counseling research and statistics; and counseling skills. The specialty includes a required internship in a school counseling setting and prepares graduates to sit for the National Counselor Exam and apply for a provisional licensed professional counselor credential in Mississippi.
Applicants must complete the online application, meet the minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA or 3.0 GPA in the last 60 undergraduate hours, submit a typed essay explaining their reason for pursuing counseling, provide contact information for three professional references, and complete a group interview with faculty. Non native English speakers must also meet the TOEFL requirement. Applications are accepted for fall admission by February 15 and for spring admission by October 1, with additional applications reviewed after the deadline.
