Emory & Henry University Online Counseling & Addiction Programs

Emory and Henry University offers three online counseling and addiction programs: a master of science program in clinical mental health counseling, a master of science program in addiction counseling, and a post-master’s certificate in addiction counseling. These programs are designed for students who want flexible online study and preparation for counseling and addiction-related careers.

The programs share a strong focus on counseling theory, ethics, diagnosis, group work, trauma counseling, and supervised clinical training. Both master’s programs are 60-credit options, and both include practicum, internship, and the comprehensive exam. The certificate program is for students who already hold a master’s degree in counseling or a related field and want to build deeper expertise in addiction counseling. Together, the programs prepare students for work in mental health agencies, substance use treatment settings, schools, and other professional settings.

The MS in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit online program designed to prepare students for licensure as professional counselors in Virginia. It includes three weeks of required residency on the Marion campus and is completed in six consecutive semesters. Important courses include professional counselor identity and ethics; counseling and psychotherapy techniques; psychopathology; counseling theories; and practicum.

The MS in addiction counseling is a 60-credit online program that prepares students for licensure as a professional counselor in Virginia, the National Certified Counselor credential, and the Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner credential. It focuses on addiction treatment, trauma-informed care, and professional counseling skills. Important courses include diagnosis and treatment of addictive disorders; trauma-informed addiction treatment; advanced treatment of substance use disorders; and an internship.

The post-master’s certificate in addiction counseling is designed for students who already have a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling or a related field with counseling in the title. It is meant for practitioners who want to specialize further in addiction studies. Important courses include diagnosis and treatment of addictive disorders; advanced treatment of substance use disorders; trauma-informed addiction treatment; and internship at a site serving people with addiction or substance use issues.

For the MS programs, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, have a minimum overall GPA of 2.75, submit two letters of recommendation from professional references, provide a two-page statement of interest, and participate in a group interview. The statement of interest must address career goals, fit with the counseling profession, readiness for graduate study, ability to form effective counseling relationships, and respect for all identities.

For the certificate program, applicants must already hold a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling or a related field with counseling in the title, and any coursework adjustments are reviewed on a case-by-case basis based on the transcript.

Emory and Henry University is a private university in Emory, Virginia, and it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The master of science in clinical mental health counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the programs are housed in the School of Health Sciences.
