Faulkner University Online Master’s in Counseling
Faulkner University offers three online counseling programs: a master of arts (MA) program in Christian counseling and family ministry, a master of science (MS) program in clinical mental health counseling, and a master of education (MEd) degree in school counseling. These programs are designed for students who want flexible study options, practical training, and preparation for counseling or ministry-related careers.
The programs share a Christian foundation, online learning options, and a strong focus on counseling skills, ethics, field experience, and service to others. The clinical mental health counseling and school counseling programs include on-campus clinical training, practicum, and internship experiences. The Christian counseling and family ministry program is fully online and focuses on family life ministry and faith-based counseling. Across the programs, Faulkner emphasizes integrity, spiritual growth, and preparation for work in real-world settings.
The MA in Christian counseling and family ministry is a 37-credit online program designed for students who want to serve families and communities through faith-based counseling and ministry. It blends biblical principles with practical counseling skills and does not lead to state licensure. Important courses include family dynamics: theoretical foundations; family life ministry: contexts and methods; Christian counseling: the skilled helper; counseling families in crisis; couple, family, and church assessments; and human intimacy and sexuality, among others.
The MS in clinical mental health counseling is a 61-credit hybrid program that prepares students for professional counseling roles and licensure in Alabama. It combines online study with required on-campus clinical training and field experiences. Important courses include counseling theories; diagnosis and treatment; integrations of theology and counseling; analysis of the helping relationship; crisis intervention in the counseling professions; life span development; internship in counseling; and counseling practicum.
The MEd in school counseling is a 60-credit online and hybrid program that prepares students to become effective K-12 school counselors. It is designed to meet Alabama certification and licensure standards and includes clinical training, practicum, and internship requirements. Important courses include introduction to school counseling; career and guidance counseling; counseling diverse populations; child and adolescent counseling; group counseling; measurement and assessment; substance abuse counseling; and counseling practicum.
For the MA in Christian counseling and family ministry, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.75, official transcripts, three references, at least one from a church leader, and a goals statement of at least 1,000 words. For the MS in clinical mental health counseling, applicants must submit a completed graduate application, a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, official transcripts, a minimum GPA of 2.75 or 3.0 in graduate courses, three recommendation forms, a 400-word goal statement, and TOEFL scores if applicable.
For the MEd in school counseling, applicants must have an application form, official transcripts, a valid class A or B teaching or educational support certificate, a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 2.75, a criminal background check, a goal statement, three recommendations, proof of teaching experience, and TOEFL results if applicable.
