Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School Addiction Counseling Program
Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School offers an online master of arts in counseling program with a specialty in addiction counseling. The program is designed for students who want to build counseling skills for work in addiction and mental health treatment.
Across the program, Hazelden Betty Ford emphasizes online flexibility, hands-on clinical experience, and training from faculty with deep experience in addiction treatment. Students complete online coursework, two on-campus residency experiences, and supervised clinical internship hours. The program also focuses on co-occurring disorders, ethical practice, and real world preparation for licensure and employment.
The master of arts in counseling, specialty in addiction counseling is a 60-credit online program that can be completed in 24 months full-time, with part time options available. It includes courses such as foundations of addiction and alcohol and drug counseling; ethics and professionalism; evidence-based counseling and theory; and treatment and recovery planning for co-occurring disorders. Students also complete practicum and internship experiences and attend two four-day residencies in Center City, Minnesota.
The program is designed to prepare students for work with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. It covers topics such as differential diagnosis, trauma-informed treatment, psychopharmacology, family psychoeducation, and crisis and trauma care. Graduates may pursue counseling roles in treatment centers, hospitals, mental health agencies, prisons, schools, private practice, and other addiction-focused settings.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree or an approved alternative admissions pathway, official transcripts, three professional references, five writing prompts, and an admission interview if requested. The GRE is not required. International applicants must also provide TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent English language test scores.
Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School is located in Center City, Minnesota, on a 500-acre campus with rolling lawns, woods, lakeshore, and wetlands. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission (NASAC), and its master of arts in counseling programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
