Indiana Wesleyan University Online Counseling Programs
Indiana Wesleyan University is a private evangelical Christian university in Marion, Indiana, and it offers several online counseling programs. The programs covered here are the MA in clinical mental health counseling, the MA in school counseling, the online addictions counseling graduate certificate, the online MA in addiction counseling, the online MA in marriage and family counseling, and the online post-master’s counseling certificate.
These programs are designed for students who want flexible graduate-level counseling training with a Christian foundation. Across the options, students can expect supervised practicum and internship experiences, coursework in counseling theory, ethics, assessment, multicultural counseling, and faith integration, and preparation for professional practice in a variety of counseling settings.
The MA in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit licensure track that prepares students to assess and treat individuals, groups, families, and organizations. The program is built around clinical experience, with supervised practicum and internship work, and it includes courses such as human growth and development; multicultural counseling; theory and techniques in group counseling; issues in addiction recovery; psychopathology; foundations in clinical mental health counseling; assessment and intervention in clinical mental health; and ecological counseling and prevention.
The MA in school counseling is a 60-credit program that prepares students for school counseling careers in Pre-K–12 settings. It includes online coursework, required intensives, practicum, and internship experiences, along with courses such as foundations of school counseling; child and adolescent development and treatment; advanced school counseling programming; appraisal of individuals and families; theory and techniques in career counseling; and integration of Christian faith in professional counseling.
The online addictions counseling graduate certificate is an 18-credit program for students who want specialized training in addiction counseling. It covers topics such as human growth and development; issues in addiction recovery; psychopharmacology; theories and treatment of addiction; and counseling addicted families.
The online MA in addiction counseling is a 48-credit program that prepares students for work as addiction counseling professionals. The curriculum includes human growth and development; multicultural counseling; issues in addiction recovery; psychopathology; and counseling addicted families; along with supervised practicum and internship experiences in addiction counseling.
The online MA in marriage and family counseling is a 60-credit program focused on systems-based counseling for individuals, couples, and families. Students complete clinical training and coursework such as sexuality, intimacy and gender; psychopathology; foundations of marriage and family therapy; and major models of MFT.
The online post-master’s counseling certificate is for students who already hold a master’s degree in counseling and need additional coursework to meet licensure or certification requirements. This program is individualized, and students work with faculty to identify the exact courses needed for their specific plan of study.
Admission requirements vary by program, but all of them require a completed application and academic preparation from an accredited institution. Most programs require a bachelor’s or master’s degree, depending on the certificate or degree; a minimum GPA of 3.0; official transcripts; a criminal background check; recommendations; and a personal statement, autobiography, or letter of intent. The GRE is required for some applicants with lower GPAs, and several programs also require a personal interview and, for licensure-focused study, documentation from the relevant licensing board.
