Jacksonville State University Online EdS in Counseling Programs

Jacksonville State University offers two online education specialist degrees (EdS) in counselor education: clinical mental health counseling and school counseling, P-12. Both programs are designed to help students strengthen advanced counseling skills and prepare for professional practice.

Both programs are 100 percent online and are built around advanced counseling knowledge, clinical experience, and professional development. They share a common focus on counseling theory, ethics, assessment, group work, research, and cultural diversity, with coursework and experiences tied to real counseling settings.

Core courses for both programs include advanced counseling theories; advanced career counseling; action research counseling I; action research counseling II; and advanced group procedures in counseling.

The EdS in clinical mental health counseling is designed for students who want to work in community settings, including private practice, mental health agencies, and marriage and family therapy clinics. The program includes courses such as psychopathology: diagnosis and treatment of DSM disorders; substance and behavioral addictions in counseling; crisis counseling intervention strategies; psychological first aid & disaster counseling; internship in school counseling; psychological principles of learning; and supervision in counseling.

The EdS in school counseling P-12 is intended for practicing school counselors who want to deepen their skills and refine their knowledge. It includes courses such as geriatric counseling; a survey course in special education; an introduction to play therapy; children and grief; substance and behavioral addictions in counseling; clinical experience I in mental health counseling; clinical experience II in mental health counseling; holistic counseling: spirit, soul, and body; and assessment in counseling.

Admission requirements differ by program but generally include a completed JSU graduate application, official transcripts, a non-refundable application fee, a professional resume, three reference forms, a writing sample, and an interview. The clinical mental health counseling EdS also requires a master’s degree in a counseling-related field, while the school counseling EdS requires a valid master’s level professional educator certificate in school counseling, two full years of acceptable P-12 professional experience, and a background check.
