Marquette University Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Marquette University offers two online master of science in clinical mental health counseling options: a general track and a child and adolescent counseling specialization. Both programs are designed to prepare students for counseling careers while offering the flexibility of online study.
Both options are 60-credit programs that can be completed in as few as three years. The curriculum combines core counseling coursework, practicum, and internship experiences, with most classes offered online in a flexible format that includes both asynchronous and synchronous learning. Students also receive dedicated support through student success coordinators and assistance with field placements in their local communities.
The general MS in clinical mental health counseling program builds counseling skills through courses such as introduction to counseling; foundations of clinical mental health counseling; professional ethics and legal issues in clinical mental health counseling; multicultural counseling; addictions counseling; and trauma counseling. It also includes practicum and internship training, giving students supervised hands-on experience in real counseling settings. This track is designed to help students meet the educational requirements for licensure as a licensed professional counselor in Wisconsin and many other states.
The child and adolescent counseling specialization follows the same core structure but adds focused preparation for working with younger clients. Students take the child and adolescent counseling elective, a practicum focused on child and adolescent development, and two internship courses centered on child and adolescent development. This specialization is designed for students who want to support youth and address the unique mental health challenges faced by children and adolescents.
Admission requires an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, a completed online application, an application fee, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, unofficial transcripts (official transcripts are required before registration if admitted), and an interview with a faculty member. Applicants may also qualify for an application fee waiver by attending an information session or being a Marquette alum. These requirements apply to both program options.

It is a private Jesuit research university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and its online master of science in clinical mental health counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
