Marymount University Online Counseling Programs: MA & PhD
Marymount University offers three online counseling options: the master of arts in counseling with clinical mental health counseling, the master of arts in counseling with clinical mental health counseling and a concentration in pastoral clinical mental health counseling, and the PhD in counselor education and supervision. These programs are built for students who want advanced training in counseling, supervision, research, and leadership.
The master’s programs are 60 credits each and are designed to help students prepare for licensure as professional counselors. Both follow a blend of online learning and in-person requirements, and both include practicum and internship experiences that give students real counseling practice. Students also benefit from faculty experience, global study opportunities, internships, and research experiences that support professional growth.
The MA in counseling with clinical mental health counseling prepares students to work with individuals facing emotional, social, school, and work-related concerns. Important courses include research and evaluation; bases of psychopathology; foundations, ethics, and professional issues in clinical mental health counseling; theories of counseling; multicultural counseling; and practicum in clinical mental health counseling. The program is designed to help students meet the coursework needed for licensure as a professional counselor and to prepare for the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) examination.
The MA in counseling with a concentration in pastoral clinical mental health counseling follows the same core counseling structure but adds specialized preparation in religion and spirituality. Important courses include contemporary and historical religious perspectives; pastoral counseling integration; grief and loss; moral and spiritual development and ethical issues in counseling; and clinical mental health counseling practicum. This program is designed for students who want to provide counseling in faith-based settings while also preparing for professional licensure.
The PhD in counselor education and supervision is an online doctoral program for students who want to become counselor educators, supervisors, researchers, and practitioners. Important courses include advanced diagnostic classification of mental disorders; professional issues in counselor education and supervision; theories and models in counseling supervision; advanced group counseling techniques; and dissertation preparation. The program includes clinical and research training, on-site learning opportunities, global study experiences, and other resources that support leadership development.
Admission to the master’s programs requires a graduate application, official transcripts, a professional resume, two recommendations, a 500-word statement of purpose, and an in-person interview. Applicants also need a course-by-course evaluation for any coursework completed outside the United States and English language assessment scores if English is not their primary language. Admission to the doctoral program requires a master’s degree in counseling, a graduate application, transcripts, a resume or CV, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and an interview with faculty that includes individual and group experiences and a live writing sample.
