MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) Master’s in School Counseling
MidAmerica Nazarene University offers a master of arts in counseling (MAC) with three concentration areas: school counseling +, marriage, couples, and family counseling, and clinical mental health counseling. The program integrates scholarship, real-world application, clinical supervision, and a Christian worldview that aligns faith and practice.
The program is designed to train students first as general professional counselors and then allow them to choose an area of emphasis. All students complete the same core coursework, which prepares them to work in schools, community agencies, hospitals, churches, private practices, or employee assistance programs. Students can also add a Christian faith and counseling emphasis that integrates faith into counseling. Courses are offered on campus and synchronously online for remote students, and the program is competitive with limited enrollment.
All MAC students complete core courses that build counseling knowledge and skills. Important core courses include counselor orientation and ethics; theories of counseling; family counseling; group counseling; trauma counseling; psychodiagnosis; multicultural counseling; individual and family assessment; and addictions counseling. Students also choose one advanced theory course from options such as advanced theories experiential and attachment; advanced theories cognitive behavioral; advanced theories postmodern; or advanced theories psychodynamic.
The MAC in school counseling + prepares students to provide counseling services to pre-K-12 students and supports dual licensure as a school counselor through the Kansas Department of Education and as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. Students take school counseling-specific courses, including foundations of school counseling; school counseling issues; comprehensive systems of student support; school counseling program development; two levels of school counseling practicum courses; and two levels of school counseling internship. Parallel pathway candidates without a professional teaching license complete two additional field experience courses.
The MAC in marriage, couples, and family counseling prepares students to work with couples and families in private practice, agency, and community settings. Students take marriage and family-specific courses, including systematic foundations and family issues; couple counseling; two levels of marriage, couple, and family counseling practicum courses; and two levels of marriage, couple, and family counseling internship. The program meets academic requirements for licensure in Kansas, Missouri, and most other states.
The MAC in clinical mental health counseling prepares students to work with diverse client populations with an emphasis on advocacy, diagnosis, and assessment. Students take clinical mental health-specific courses, including foundations of mental health counseling; prevention and intervention in mental health; mental health issues and advocacy; two levels of mental health counseling practicum courses; and two levels of mental health counseling internship. This track meets academic requirements for licensure in Kansas, Missouri, and most other states. The program also supports work in private practice, community agencies, managed behavioral health care organizations, hospitals, employee assistance programs, and substance abuse treatment centers.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, a preferred minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, or a 3.2 GPA in the last 30 hours of undergraduate coursework. The application process includes completing an online application, submitting official transcripts, arranging and completing a writing assessment with the Counseling Department, submitting three professional or academic recommendations, and completing a half-day comprehensive interview session with graduate faculty after meeting all other admission requirements. The program has a competitive selection process with limited enrollment.
