Old Dominion University Online Master’s in Counseling
Old Dominion University offers an online master of science in education (MSEd) in counseling with a concentration in clinical mental health counseling. The program is part of the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies through the Department of Counseling and Human Services.
The program is built for flexible online study and follows an accelerated eight-week format with no scheduled meeting times. It includes academic advising, mentoring, and support for students who want to fit education into a busy life. Students can also make use of military service, existing credits, and work experience to help move through the degree more efficiently.
The counseling curriculum covers group dynamics, professional identity, practical skills, theory, career development, social and cultural diversity, research, and assessment. It also places a strong emphasis on social justice, equity, cultural awareness, and advocacy, giving students a foundation for supporting individuals and communities in real counseling settings.
The clinical mental health counseling concentration includes courses in family dynamics; substance abuse counseling; clinical supervision; and diagnosis and psychopathology. Students also study evidence-based practice, client- and population-centered advocacy, and the counselor’s role in health care. The program includes 700 hours of supervised practical experience through a capstone experience that spans three semesters, helping students apply classroom learning in a real counseling setting.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.8 GPA. Applicants must submit an essay about their goals for becoming a professional counselor, two letters of recommendation, and official transcripts from all previous universities. The GRE is not required for admission.
