Ottawa University offers several online counseling programs, including the certificate of advanced graduate studies (CAGS) in behavioral health counseling, addiction counseling, gerocounseling, and treatment of trauma, abuse, and deprivation, as well as the master of arts in education in school counseling (MAE-SC), the online bachelor of science in addiction counseling, and the online master of science in addiction counseling (MSAC).
The university’s counseling options are designed for students and professionals who want flexible study and practical career preparation. All programs are offered online, and some are also available at select campus locations. The counseling curriculum across these programs emphasizes applied training, professional readiness, and service in behavioral health, addiction, trauma, aging, and school counseling.
The CAGS options are intended for professionals who already hold a master’s degree and want further training. The behavioral health counseling certificate focuses on integrative behavioral therapy and working with healthcare professionals. The addiction counseling certificate covers topics such as biological bases for abnormal behavior; psychopharmacology and addiction counseling; co-occurring disorders; addictions counseling in family systems; and fundamental theory of treatment of trauma. The gerocounseling certificate focuses on counseling older adults and covers perspectives on aging; expressive arts therapies; counseling adults in late adulthood; wellness counseling; and advanced special topics. The treatment of trauma, abuse, and deprivation certificate prepares students for trauma response and crisis intervention and includes fundamentals and theory of trauma; expressive arts therapies; children and complex trauma; and clinical assessment of trauma.
The MAE-SC concentration is designed to prepare students for school counseling roles in Arizona and Kansas. It focuses on helping students develop, plan, evaluate, and implement school counseling programs while supporting academic, social, personal, and career development. Important courses include counseling and the helping professions; school counseling in a changing environment; group counseling and dynamics; life plan and career development school counseling; and the internship sequence. The program is state-approved in Arizona and Kansas and is also accredited by CAEP.
The online BS in addiction counseling gives students a foundation in addiction, substance use disorders, counseling theory, and long-term recovery support. It covers subjects such as introduction to substance abuse disorders; theories of personality and addiction; clinical addiction counseling issues; group counseling in addiction; and practicum and internship experiences. The program is offered online and is designed for students who want to begin a career in substance abuse counseling or continue into graduate study.
The online MSAC prepares students for addiction counseling careers and advanced professional practice. The curriculum includes a graduate seminar and courses such as introduction to addictions; multicultural concerns in addictions counseling; law and ethics in addictions counseling; psychopharmacology and addictions counseling; co-occurring disorders; fundamentals of treatment of trauma, abuse, and deprivation; addiction counseling in family systems; and practicum experiences. The program is meant to support career advancement and is aligned with licensure or certification needs in many states.
Admission requirements for the master’s level programs include an admissions application, application fee, official transcripts, a professional essay, three letters of recommendation, and completed graduate transcripts if applicable. The admissions committee reviews academic background, work experience, recommendation letters, and the personal statement on career development. GMAT and GRE scores are not required, and some programs may ask for additional requirements. The CAGS programs are designed for professionals who already hold a master’s degree from a regionally accredited school and are seeking more training.
