Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions Master’s in Counseling
Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions offers a master of science in counseling with five degree options, including addictions counseling, clinical mental health counseling, marriage, couples, and family counseling, school counseling, and a dual degree option. The dual degree option allows students to combine clinical mental health counseling with another eligible counseling master’s program and earn two master’s degrees.
The counseling program is built for working professionals and uses a limited residency format with online learning and required on-site visits. Students join weekly Zoom classes, complete core counseling training, and gain clinical experience through practicum and internship work. The program is designed to help students meet professional standards while preparing for counseling careers in a variety of settings.
The master of science in counseling is a 60-credit program with core courses in counseling orientation & ethics; research methods and program evaluation; career counseling; assessment and testing; psychodiagnosis; crisis, trauma, and suicide; and substance abuse and addictions. Students also complete clinical training and may add elective courses to support their area of interest. The program includes three on-site immersions in Provo, Utah, where students meet faculty and take part in in-person academic training.
The addictions counseling track prepares students to become mental health counselors who specialize in substance use disorders and other behavioral addictions. Students develop knowledge of the addiction process and learn how addiction relates to mental health and behavioral concerns while building counseling skills that support long-term recovery. Specialized coursework includes psychopharmacology and treatment planning; treatment of addictions; and biopsychosocial aspects of addiction.
The clinical mental health counseling track prepares students to work in community agencies, private counseling practices, substance abuse treatment centers, child and adolescent clinics, family counseling centers, and pastoral settings. Key courses include mental health care systems; psychopharmacology and treatment planning; and systems theory for families and couples. This track is designed to meet Utah coursework requirements for state licensure as a clinical mental health counselor (CMHC).
The school counseling track prepares students to become professional school counselors and meet coursework specifications for certification or licensure. Important courses include foundations of school counseling; college and career readiness; and school counseling interventions for student success. The program focuses on school counseling services, student support, and building comprehensive school counseling programs.
The marriage, couples, and family Counseling track prepares counselors to understand family systems and apply systemic counseling approaches when working with individuals, couples, and families. Graduates are prepared for professional roles in mental health agencies, inpatient settings, and schools. Specialized coursework includes systems theory for families and couples; practice of marriage and family counseling; and counseling children and adolescents in the family system.
The dual degree option allows students to complete two counseling degrees at once. Students complete 72 credits by combining the counseling core curriculum with two counseling specialty areas, the required internship experiences for both specialties, and an elective course. The program allows students to pair clinical mental health counseling with another eligible counseling specialization. By completing two counseling specializations, graduates develop a broader skill set and greater flexibility for professional practice.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, and an acceptable undergraduate statistics or research methods course with a grade of C or higher. Applicants with a lower GPA may need GRE, MAT, or PLT scores from the last five years. They must also submit an online application, official transcripts, a resume or CV, a statement of professional goals, and three letters of recommendation.
