Rutgers University Online MS in Clinical & Rehabilitation Counseling
Rutgers School of Health Professions is part of Rutgers Health and offers the master of science in rehabilitation counseling with a clinical mental health counseling track. The program is designed for students who want counseling training for work with people who have mental health conditions and related disabilities.
The program combines counseling theory, research, ethics, and supervised clinical experience. Students can study part-time or full-time, and they may take classes on campus in Piscataway or Camden, or online. The degree is built to prepare students for community-based counseling work in New Jersey and the surrounding region.
The MS in rehabilitation counseling with a clinical mental health counseling track is a 60-credit program. It prepares students to counsel people with serious mental illness and support recovery, wellness, and community living. Important courses include counseling and case management; medical and psychological aspects of disability; psychopathology; social and cultural diversity issues; theories of counseling and personality; career counseling and consultation; crisis, disaster, and trauma counseling; addictions and mental illness; counseling children, adolescents, families, and couples; and substance use counseling and consultation.
This program focuses on helping people manage mental health conditions and disability related challenges. It also prepares students for jobs in community agencies, addiction treatment facilities, rehabilitation agencies, and government human services settings. The curriculum includes clinical mental health counseling content along with rehabilitation-related study.
Admission requires a completed application, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a written statement, a resume, and two letters of recommendation. Applicants are not required to submit GRE scores, and they may also need an interview with faculty. International applicants must provide a transcript evaluation, and non-native English speakers must submit TOEFL scores.
Rutgers School of Health Professions has campuses in Newark, Piscataway, Scotch Plains, and Stratford, New Jersey. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), and the program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) with a specialization in clinical mental health counseling.
