Salem College Online Master’s in School Counseling (MEd)
Salem College is a private women’s liberal arts college offering an online master of education (MEd) in school counseling.
The program is designed for students who want to become school counselors and support K-12 students. It includes internship experiences, online classes, and two weekend residencies on the Salem campus. The program also focuses on leadership, equity, and mental health in school settings.
The master of education in school counseling is a 48-credit program that can be completed in two or three years. Important courses include introduction to the school counseling profession; group counseling: strategies and techniques for school counselors; research for school counseling; lifespan development; ethics and legalities in education for school counseling; and managing the comprehensive school counseling program. Students also complete practicum and internship work in K-12 schools.
This program prepares students for work as career counselors, social-emotional learning specialists, and school counselors. It includes training in advocacy, child and adolescent development, career counseling, group counseling, and program management. Students who complete the program and pass the required PRAXIS exam may be eligible for North Carolina school counselor licensure.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the undergraduate or graduate level, two writing prompts, two professional recommendations, and an acceptable criminal background check. Students must also meet the program’s application requirements before being considered.
Salem College is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and the MEd in school counseling is approved for K-12 school counseling licensure in North Carolina by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).
