The program combines flexible learning with professional preparation for counseling careers. The program is offered in both eight-quarter and ten-quarter formats and requires 95 credits. Students develop knowledge of counseling theories, assessment, treatment practices, research, and professional ethics while preparing for state licensure and National Certified Counselor certification. The program also includes required in-person clinical training through practicum and internship experiences.
Important courses include counseling theory; clinical mental health counseling; psychopathology; counseling techniques; multicultural foundations; diagnosis and treatment of addictive disorders; psychopharmacology; counseling administration, advocacy, supervision, and policy; human sexuality; and crisis and trauma. Clinical training includes a 100-hour practicum followed by three internship experiences totaling 600 clinical hours.
This program prepares graduates for careers as mental health counselors. Its goals emphasize ethical practice, social justice, multicultural counseling, assessment, research, and evidence-based treatment across the lifespan.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum GPA standard, English proficiency for applicable students, an interview, an application, a personal or professional statement, official transcripts, a resume, and a background check. Approval from the campus admissions committee is also required.
South University in West Palm Beach is located in Florida and is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
