The University of Alaska Fairbanks offers online counseling programs through its School of Education’s Counseling Department. Students can choose a graduate certificate in school counseling with an elementary, secondary, or K-12 focus, or an MEd in counseling with a clinical mental health, school counseling, or combined clinical mental health and school counseling focus.
All programs are delivered through distance education, with most classes held through weekly live video meetings and some courses offered asynchronously. Students complete practicum and internship experiences in person unless restrictions require telehealth, and placements can usually be arranged in the student’s home community.
The MEd in counseling requires at least 60 credits, with combined clinical mental health and school counseling options requiring up to 72 credits. The shared curriculum includes foundations of counseling; counseling skills; counseling theories and applications; professional ethics; multicultural counseling; and group counseling. Students also complete supervised field practicum and internship experiences.
The MEd in clinical mental health counseling prepares students for professional counseling careers in community and mental health agencies or private practice. Important courses include counseling interventions for adults; adult development; and multicultural psychopathology. Students complete a supervised field practicum and two internships.
The MEd in school counseling offers elementary, secondary, and K-12 options. The program prepares students to support academic, personal, social, and career development in school settings. Important courses include introduction to school counseling; advanced school counseling; and child psychopathology. Students complete a field practicum and internships; the K-12 option includes a third internship.
Students may also combine clinical mental health counseling with school counseling. The elementary and secondary combined options require 30 credits in the concentration, while the K-12 combined option requires 33 credits.
The graduate certificate in school counseling requires at least 30 credits and is available with elementary, secondary, and K-12 concentrations. It is designed for applicants who already hold a master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or another human services field. The shared coursework includes Foundations of Counseling; Counseling Skills; Introduction to School Counseling; Professional Ethics; Advanced School Counseling; Child Psychopathology; and Multicultural Counseling. Students complete two internships in the elementary and secondary options and three internships in the K-12 option.
Admission requirements generally include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA, official transcripts, a resume or curriculum vitae, a statement of academic goals, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants must also complete an interview with counseling faculty. GRE scores are neither required nor considered. Certificate applicants must hold a master’s degree in a human services area and complete required criminal background checks and field placement procedures.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks is the flagship campus of the University of Alaska System and is located in Fairbanks, Alaska. UAF is institutionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Its clinical mental health counseling and school counseling MEd programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. Rates may change, so please check here for the latest tuition information. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students. “Resident” and “non-resident” refer to the student’s school-recognized state residency status. Tuition number represents the cost of tuition for the entire program, not per semester or year. Estimated total tuition does not include additional fees.
