The University of North Dakota (UND) offers primarily asynchronous online master of arts (MA) programs in counseling for working professionals, with part-time tracks in addiction counseling, community mental health counseling, K-12 school counseling, and rehabilitation counseling. Additionally, there are two school counseling certificates available, one with an educator’s track and the other with a re-specialization track. These programs provide a flexible path to licensure without campus visits, using seminar-style classes and advanced reading or writing to build evidence-based skills and multicultural competence.
All programs emphasize theoretical foundations, practitioner training, and local fieldwork, such as practicum and internships in approved sites. The online master of arts program comprises 33 credits of core courses. These include life-span development in counseling; counseling methods; methods of research; group theory and process; career counseling; diagnostic and prevention strategies in counseling; diagnostic and therapeutic skills lab; theories of counseling, personality, and development; multicultural counseling; child, family, and couples counseling; and an independent study or scholarly project. Total credits range from 60 to 66, with both thesis and non-thesis options available.
The online MA in counseling with a concentration in addiction counseling trains students to assess and treat behavioral or substance addictions for recovery in community settings. Emphasis courses include ethics: counseling and counseling psychology; assessment in counseling; dynamics of addiction; trauma crisis counseling; counseling practicum; and addictions counseling internship. It meets North Dakota licensure requirements for addiction counselors and other states.
The online MA in counseling with a concentration in community mental health counseling equips students to treat individuals, couples, and families across the lifespan for anxiety, trauma, depression, crises, and chronic issues. Courses include ethics: counseling and counseling psychology; assessment in counseling; dynamics of addiction; trauma crisis counseling; counseling practicum; and community counseling internship. It fulfills Licensed Associate Counselor requirements in North Dakota, Minnesota, and other states.
The online MA in counseling with a concentration in K-12 school counseling prepares students to support K-12 social-emotional, career, and academic needs while collaborating with families, staff, and communities. Courses include ethics: counseling and counseling psychology; assessment in counseling; school counseling and program management; trauma crisis counseling; school counseling practicum; and school counseling internship. This program meets licensure requirements in North Dakota and other states.
The online MA in counseling with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling focuses on clinical services for people with disabilities, including vocational counseling, evaluation, veterans care, addiction rehabilitation, and mental health for inclusion and independence. Courses include rehabilitation counseling: foundations of ethical and professional issues; rehabilitation counseling: assessment and evaluation; dynamics of addiction; medical psychosocial aspects of disabilities; case management and community partnership in rehabilitation; counseling practicum; and rehabilitation counseling internship.
The 48-credit school counseling certificate: educators track is for master’s in education holders seeking K-12 certification. Courses include ethics: counseling and counseling psychology; methods of research; assessment in counseling; group theory and process; career counseling; diagnostic and prevention strategies in counseling; diagnostic and therapeutic skills lab; school counseling and program management; counseling methods; theories of counseling; personality and development; multicultural counseling; school counseling practicum; and school counseling internship.
The 23-credit school counseling certificate: re-specialization track is for master’s in mental health or community agency counseling holders. Courses include ethics: counseling and counseling psychology; school counseling and program management; school counseling practicum; and school counseling internship.
Online MA admission requires a four-year bachelor’s degree, official transcripts, undergraduate-level abnormal and developmental psychology courses, a GPA of 2.75 overall, a personal statement, and English proficiency. School counseling certificates require a relevant master’s, 3.0 graduate GPA, online application fee, transcripts, three professional recommendations, a personal statement, and a resume.
