University of Tennessee Martin Online Master’s in Counseling

The University of Tennessee at Martin offers three online counseling programs through its College of Education, Health, and Behavioral Sciences and Department of Educational Studies. Students can choose the MSEd in counseling with a clinical mental health concentration, the MSEd in counseling with a school counseling concentration, or the MSEd in counseling with a school counseling licensure-only option.

All three programs are designed to prepare socially ethical, skilled, and culturally aware counselors. The programs combine online coursework with counseling theory, professional practice, human development, assessment, ethics, and supervised field experiences. Students also complete an on-campus residency, which allows faculty to assess their counseling skills, professional dispositions, and academic ability.

The MSEd in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit online program that prepares students to address prevention, mental health, and wellness concerns. Important courses include introduction to counseling; professional, ethical, and legal issues in counseling; theory and techniques of counseling; mental health and psychopathology; alcohol and substance abuse counseling; and principles of crisis intervention. Students also complete a practicum and two counseling internships. The program meets Tennessee educational requirements for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health Service Provider (LPC/MHSP) credentials. Students in other states may be eligible for licensure based on their home state requirements.

The MSEd in school counseling is a 60-credit online program that prepares students to support learners, teachers, school personnel, and parents with academic, career, and personal development needs. Important courses include theories of counseling; career counseling; group counseling; classroom management for school counselors; organization and administration of school counseling; and special topics in school counseling. Students complete a pre-practicum, school counseling practicum, secondary school internship, and elementary school internship. Graduates are eligible to pursue Tennessee licensure as school counselors.

The MSEd in school counseling licensure only is a 30-credit non-degree program for students who already hold a master’s degree and want to become licensed school counselors. Separate plans are available for students with an education background and students with a counseling or social work background. Important courses include theories of counseling; career counseling; group counseling; school counseling practicum; organization and administration of school counseling; and special topics in school counseling. Students must complete the required coursework, residency, satisfactory disposition evaluations, and the Praxis Professional School Counselor exam at the level required by Tennessee.

Admission requirements vary by program, but applicants must request official transcripts from every college or university attended. The university requires a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5 for graduate admission, while additional program requirements also apply.

Counseling applicants must submit an online application, three recommendation letters, a four-question personal statement, a resume, transcripts where a degree was conferred, a signed acknowledgment of on-campus residency, and an application fee. Applicants to the school counseling concentration must also provide documentation of teaching experience or submit a signed acknowledgment of teaching experience. Applicants participate in an interview with counseling faculty, and accepted students complete a virtual new student orientation.
