Eastern New Mexico University Online Master’s in Counseling
Eastern New Mexico University offers two online counseling programs: a master of arts in clinical mental health counseling and a master of education with an emphasis in school counseling. Both programs are designed for students who want flexible study options, practical training, and preparation for counseling licensure in New Mexico.
The programs share a focus on counseling skills, ethics, assessment, human growth, and field experience. They are built for students who want to prepare for work in schools, clinical mental health agencies, or private practice. Both programs are available online, and students do not need to come to the Portales campus. ENMU also emphasizes affordability, small class sizes, and faculty support.
The 60-credit online master of arts in clinical mental health counseling program is designed for students who want to pursue licensure in clinical, state agency, or mental health counseling. It prepares students for professional licensure in New Mexico and other states. Important courses include professional orientation in counseling; advanced psychopathology; techniques in counseling; introduction to clinical mental health; and counseling assessment.
The 48-credit online master of education in school counseling program is designed for students who want to pursue school counselor licensure or certification in New Mexico. It prepares students to work as elementary or secondary school counselors and includes a practicum and a 300-hour internship in a school setting. Key courses include school counseling; counseling children and adolescents; trauma and crisis counseling; and an internship or seminar.
The counseling curriculum includes courses such as ethics; research seminar; career and lifestyle development; theories of counseling; group counseling; human growth and development; and social and cultural foundations. The master of arts in counseling also includes elective options such as trauma and crisis Counseling; family counseling; and counseling children and adolescents. The school counseling program includes field training through practicum and internship experiences, while the MA in counseling includes practicum and internship seminar work as part of the degree.
Applicants must be admitted to the Graduate School and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Students with a GPA between 2.8 and 2.9 may be considered for conditional admission if they earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 with no grade lower than a B during their first semester or first nine hours. Applicants must also submit a letter of application that states the intended area of emphasis and explains how the degree will support their career goals, along with confirmation of admission into the regular or alternate licensure program. Admission to the Graduate School does not guarantee admission to the counseling program.
