GW Online Rehabilitation Counseling Programs

The George Washington University offers two online rehabilitation counseling programs: a graduate certificate in the foundations of rehabilitation services and a master of arts in education and human development in the field of rehabilitation counseling. Both programs are designed for students who want flexible study options and practical preparation for working with people with disabilities.

Across both programs, GW emphasizes hands-on learning, professional preparation, and support for career growth. Students can study online or on the Foggy Bottom campus, and the programs are designed to help learners build counseling skills for real-world settings. The certificate can also connect into the master’s degree, since all 12 credits may be transferred toward the full program.

The graduate certificate in the foundations of rehabilitation services is designed to help students strengthen their counseling skills and learn how to support people with disabilities in employment settings. It covers topics such as social and cultural dimensions; foundations of rehabilitation counseling; disability management and psychosocial rehabilitation; and job placement and supported employment. The program also supports preparation for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) exam or licensure as a professional counselor.

The master of arts in education and human development in the field of rehabilitation counseling prepares students to work with people facing physical, mental, emotional, or social challenges. The program includes supervised practicum and internship experience, along with courses such as counseling interview skills; group counseling; family counseling; and trauma and crisis intervention. Students who complete the program may be eligible for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential, the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential, and licensure as a professional counselor.

Admission requirements for both programs include a bachelor’s degree, a resume, transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities, a statement of purpose, and two letters of recommendation. There is no application fee. The master’s program also requires 100 hours of practicum and 600 hours of internship, and online students must spend 3 days on campus for the interview skills class and three days on campus for the group counseling class.

The George Washington University is located in Washington, DC, and is a private federally chartered research university. It is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The Graduate School of Education and Human Development is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
