Grand View University Online Clinical Counseling Programs

Grand View University offers two counseling programs: the master of science in clinical mental health counseling and the post-master’s certificate in clinical mental health counseling. Both programs are designed for students who want flexible online study and preparation for licensure in mental health counseling.

These programs share a focus on practical training, ethical practice, and serving diverse populations. Grand View combines asynchronous online learning with live engagement, supervision, and field experience. The university also emphasizes multicultural competence, research-informed practice, and strong preparation for real counseling work.

The master of science in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit graduate program that prepares students for licensure as mental health counselors. It includes coursework in counseling theories; assessment and appraisal; group counseling; multiculturalism in counseling; crisis intervention; psychopharmacology; and diagnosis and treatment planning. Students also complete practicum and internship experiences and a residency requirement that includes both on-ground and virtual synchronous components.

The post-master’s certificate in clinical mental health counseling is a 24-credit online program for students who already hold a master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited counseling program. It is designed to help students meet Iowa licensure specialization requirements. Key courses include crisis intervention; theory and treatment of substance abuse; psychopharmacology; diagnosis and treatment planning; psychopathology; counseling practicum; and two internships.

Admission requirements vary by program. For the master’s degree, applicants need a completed bachelor’s degree or a degree completion plan, a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher or a 3.0 in the last 60 hours, a personal essay, and a background check. For the certificate, applicants must hold a master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited counseling program, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and submit a personal statement, references, a resume, a graduate transcript, and identity verification. Admission to the certificate is competitive and based on a completed application.
