The program is 100 percent online, with classes starting every eight weeks, and can be completed in as little as two to three years. It is designed for working professionals and blends flexible online coursework with supervised clinical experiences. The curriculum is approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and aligns with state K-12 school counseling certification requirements. Students learn practical counseling, assessment, and intervention skills used in schools, and they collaborate with teachers, families, and administrators.

The master of arts in school counseling consists of 45 credits that emphasize core competencies and practical skills. Important courses include ethical, legal, and professional issues in counseling; foundations of school counseling; counseling theories; multicultural counseling; school counseling program implementation and leadership; school counseling practicum; and school counseling internship. The program also includes courses in assessment, research, group counseling, career counseling, child and adolescent counseling, and crisis and substance abuse counseling.

To be eligible for K-12 school counseling certification in Missouri, students must hold a valid educator’s certificate from the state of Missouri or complete nine additional hours that include the exceptional child; introduction and methods of teaching and inclusion for students with cross-categorical disabilities and field experience; and classroom and behavior management or developing responsible learners. The program also offers internship options for students who need additional hours for certification.

Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale, completion of the online application, and submission of official transcripts from all previously attended colleges, universities, and post-secondary institutions.

Missouri Baptist University is located in Creve Coeur, Missouri, and is one of three universities of the Missouri Baptist Convention.
