Prescott College Online Master’s in Counseling

Prescott College offers an online master of science in counseling. The program is designed for students who want professional counseling training with a strong focus on social justice, environmental sustainability, and hands-on learning.

The counseling program is built around a student-centered approach that combines online study with a required three-day colloquium on the Prescott College campus. It prepares students to work with mental and emotional wellness in a way that looks at personal, social, and environmental factors together. Students can also shape their studies through elective choices, optional concentrations, and postgraduate certificates.

The master of science in counseling is a 60-credit program with a majority of coursework completed online. It includes core studies in counseling theory, diagnosis, assessment, human growth and development, multicultural diversity, research, ethics, group work, and professional counseling skills. Students also complete a practicum and two internship courses.

The program offers a clinical mental health counseling specialization, which prepares graduates to work with clients across a range of emotional and mental concerns. Important courses include professional orientation to mental health counseling; psychopathology, diagnosis, and treatment planning; helping relationships; counseling theories; professional counseling ethics; and supervised counseling practicum and internship. Career options may include private practice, community-based mental health centers, hospitals, and other treatment settings.

Students may also choose optional concentrations in human sexuality counseling, marriage, couples, and family counseling, or somatic counseling. The human sexuality counseling concentration includes courses such as neurobiology of relationships; human sexuality counseling; and advanced human sexuality counseling. The marriage, couple, and family counseling concentration includes marriage, couple, and family counseling; advanced theories in marriage, couple, and family counseling; and advanced skills in marriage, couple, and family counseling. The somatic counseling concentration includes courses such as the body in counseling: a somatic approach to the therapeutic relationship; the neurobiology of relationships; trauma and crisis; and mindfulness in clinical practice.

In addition, students may choose to engage in one of the optional post-graduate certificates in adventure-based counseling, nature-based counseling, or expressive arts therapy.

Admission requires a bachelor’s degree, and interested students are directed to contact the Admissions department for more information. Students in the program must also complete supervised practicum and internship hours and pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) before graduation.
