Richmont Graduate University offers master’s degrees through its School of Counseling, including the master of arts in clinical mental health counseling.
The counseling program is built to combine academic training, clinical skill development, and Christian faith. It is designed for students who want to grow as counselors while also developing personal and spiritual maturity. The online format includes live and independent study, with regular interaction through the online portal, classmates, and faculty.
The online master of arts in clinical mental health counseling is a 66-credit program that can be completed in three to four years. Students complete regular coursework online and also attend four required in-person residencies during the program. They are also required to complete a Richmont-supervised clinical internship in their community.
This program prepares students for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) and for national certification as a national certified counselor (NCC). It is focused on clinical excellence, Christian integration, and care for the whole person. Important courses include foundations in counseling; helping relationships; psychopathology; clinical appraisal and assessment; addictions: theory and clinical assessment; social and cultural issues in counseling; theodicy and trauma counseling; and counseling practicum.
Admission requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants are also recommended to have basic undergraduate psychology courses and an introductory course in psychological statistics. Personal interviews may be requested, and non-native English speakers must submit a TOEFL score.
Richmont Graduate University is a private Christian university with campuses in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia. It is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and the master of arts in clinical mental health counseling is accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
