Seattle University Online Master’s in Counseling Programs
Founded in 1891, Seattle University is committed to providing an inclusive, values-centered education that prepares students for meaningful careers and leadership through service and social justice. The College of Education offers two online counseling master’s programs for students across the United States. These include the master of arts in education in clinical mental health counseling and the master of arts in education in school counseling.
Both online programs require 90 credits and are designed to be completed in about three years, with classes beginning each September. Students complete the first two years through asynchronous online coursework. During the first and second years, students also attend a four-day summer residency on the Seattle University campus to participate in hands-on learning experiences.
The third year of both programs combines online learning with supervised field experiences. Students complete a practicum and internship at approved sites. Each program includes a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship. Students also receive individual and group supervision throughout their field experiences. Both programs emphasize social justice, multicultural practice, and ethical leadership. Graduates of both programs are also eligible to pursue Washington State Substance Use Disorder Certification.
The MAEd in clinical mental health counseling prepares students for careers in mental health counseling while developing ethical, reflective, and culturally competent professionals. The program is designed for students who want to become mental health leaders, advocates, and agents of social change. Important courses include counseling theories; multicultural and social justice counseling; diagnosis and assessment; psychopharmacology for counselors; consultation and supervision; and clinical mental health counseling practicum and internship.
The MAEd in school counseling prepares students for school counselor certification in public and private K-12 settings. The program uses a multicultural, anti-racist, and data-driven approach that supports students’ academic, social, and emotional development.
Graduates are prepared for Residency-level Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certification in Washington and may also pursue Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) licensure in Washington and other approved states. Important courses include introduction to school counseling; consultation, leadership, and advocacy; counseling for social justice; child and adolescent counseling; and school counseling practicum and internship.
Admission for both programs requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 3.0, a resume, a letter of intent, recommendation forms, and official or unofficial transcripts. The school counseling program also asks for a video response and prefers related experience with schools or school-aged youth. Applicants with a lower GPA may be considered for probationary admission.
Seattle University is a private Jesuit Catholic university located in Seattle, Washington. It is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), and both counseling programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The school counseling program is also approved by the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) in Washington.
