The Citadel Online Master’s in School Counseling
The Citadel offers an online master of education (MEd) in counselor education for adults who want to become school counselors at the elementary or secondary level. The Zucker Family School of Education offers the program and prepares educational leaders, school counselors, and K-12 teachers through applied learning, personalized instruction, and community partnerships.
The MEd in counselor education requires 60 credits and includes a Zucker Family School of Education core and a counseling core. Students can specialize in elementary school counseling or secondary school counseling. The program combines counseling theory, professional skills, multicultural awareness, assessment, and supervised school-based training.
Important courses include human growth and development; introduction to the counseling profession; counseling theories and practice; counseling diverse populations; career counseling and development; and program planning, management, and evaluation in school counseling. Students also complete a practicum in school counseling and a 600-clock-hour internship through Internship I and II. The internship takes place in either elementary school settings from kindergarten through grade eight or secondary school settings from grades six through twelve. Students must earn a minimum score of 159 on the Praxis II test for professional school counselor before enrolling in the practicum.
Admission requires an online graduate application, a nonrefundable application fee, official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree and any graduate coursework, and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Applicants must also submit a personal statement discussing their personal and educational background, strengths and weaknesses, career goals, readiness for graduate-level study, potential for success as a counselor, and respect for cultural differences.
