University of Central Oklahoma Online MEd in School Counseling
The University of Central Oklahoma offers two online master of education programs in school counseling: the 33-credit MEd in school counseling and the 60-credit MEd in school counseling with a specialization in school and professional counseling.
Both programs prepare professional counselors to work in school environments. The curriculum follows standards established by the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselor Association, and the Oklahoma State Department of Education. The programs also align with criteria established by the National Board for Certified Counselors, allowing students to pursue the National Certified Counselor and National Certified School Counselor designations.
The MEd in school counseling prepares students to develop comprehensive school counseling programs for K-12 students. Students learn to support academic, social and emotional, and career development. Important courses include principles and ethics of school counseling; theories and techniques of group counseling; multicultural counseling; developmental school counseling; and an internship in school counseling.
The MEd in school counseling with a specialization in school and professional counseling combines the 33 hours required for Oklahoma school counselor certification with additional coursework for professional counseling. Important courses include abnormal psychology for school-based mental health providers; counselor and ethical consultant; counseling children and adolescents; and practicum in professional counseling. Students also complete an internship in school counseling and choose electives such as trauma counseling; substance abuse in special populations; family systems theory; and psychopharmacology for mental health professionals. Graduates meet the requirements to apply to the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health to take the National Counselor Examination.
Admission to both programs requires an online application and official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from each institution attended. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions. Applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 overall or 3.00 in the last 60 hours attempted. Students whose native language or second language is not English must submit evidence of English language proficiency. Applicants to the school counseling program must also provide a current teaching certificate or complete six hours.
The University of Central Oklahoma is a public university in Edmond, Oklahoma, and is Oklahoma’s third-largest university. It is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
