ACU Online Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT)
Abilene Christian University (ACU) is a private Christian research university in Abilene, Texas. Through ACU Online, the university offers a COAMFTE-accredited master of marriage and family therapy program that prepares students for Christian service and leadership as licensed marriage and family therapists.
Designed for working adults, the online master’s in marriage and family therapy is a 60-credit program that takes approximately 33 months to complete. It combines practical training in couple, family, and child therapy; mental illness; substance abuse and addiction; and assessment and diagnostic processes. All students complete at least 12 months of internship with more than 100 hours of supervision and take courses such as family theory; systemic diagnosis and assessment; addictive disorders; cultural diversity in family therapy; and couples therapy to prepare for the marriage and family therapy national examination and work in settings like private practice, community clinics, churches, hospitals, and residential or recovery centers.
Students choose one of several concentration tracks within the MFT degree. The general MFT track focuses on individual and family development across the life span, crisis and trauma in family systems, and spiritually informed practice through courses such as spirituality in marriage and family therapy; therapy across the life-cycle; and ecology of crisis and trauma for the therapist.
The medical family therapy concentration prepares students to work in healthcare settings by covering introduction to medical family therapy; medical family therapy theory, practice, and research; and interventions in medical family therapy.
The therapy with military families concentration examines dynamics of military life, family violence, and deployment-related stressors through dynamics of military families; family therapy with military families; assessment and treatment of family violence; and ecology of crisis and trauma for the therapist.
The treatment of trauma concentration addresses trauma models, systemic violence, and family violence treatment through trauma intervention models; systemic trauma and violence; assessment and treatment of family violence, and ecology of crisis and trauma for the therapist.
Admission to the online MFT program requires completion of an online application with a non-refundable processing fee, official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent, a written purpose statement, three letters of recommendation, and evidence of a life reflecting high moral standards. A video conference interview with the program director may be requested. Students must earn a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA in the first 12 credit hours.
